At least 9 out of 14 Aldermen support return of Home Rule to Rockford
While Empower Rockford is disappointed that the Rockford City Council declined its opportunity to place Home Rule on the March 21 ballot, we are encouraged by the support many Aldermen have shown for Home Rule.
In fact, at least nine of fourteen Aldermen have publicly endorsed the re-establishment of Home Rule for Rockford. A number of them have committed to assist in our campaign to re-establish Home Rule by signing petitions and carrying petitions to their constituents for signatures.
Chamber of Commerce, neighborhood associations, unions to help collect signatures
We now have until late August to obtain about 12,000 signatures for the Home Rule question to be voted on in November. This will allow us a comfortable margin of error in case any of the signatures are disallowed. Many supportive groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, neighborhood associations, trade unions and others have agreed to help. Individuals like you can help, too.
How you can help return Home Rule to Rockford
You can take a lead role in endorsing the question of re-establishing Home Rule by carrying petitions, holding a neighborhood meeting (we can provide speakers) or getting involved in other volunteer capacities including the newly formed HomeRuleNow Coalition which will be meeting monthly. Many hundreds of hours of volunteer time have gotten us this far. Many hundreds more will be necessary before we achieve our goal of restoring Home Rule to Rockford and placing us on an even playing field with the other Illinois cities with whom we compete.
Rockford needs Home Rule to position our community for future success. Will you pitch in and help make it happen? Please click here and send us an email with your name, address and phone number.
